We gaan terug!
In 2004 brengen we de Beneluxcon terug naar de oorsprong. De Beneluxcon is bedacht in België en de eerste Beneluxcon werd gehouden in België. En nu gaan we terug, met een Nederbelgische ploeg.
In Blankenberge aan de Vlaamse kust ligt, een kippenstapje van zee, driesterrenhotel Alfa-Inn - een prettig familiehotel met een aantal zaaltjes en grote zaal die dubbel dienst doet als ontbijtruimte. Er is een gezellige lounge met mollige banken en een open haard (op gas). Bovendien hebben we het hele hotel voor onszelf. Een restaurant is er niet, maar eettentjes zijn er in de hele omgeving te vinden. Het hotel regelt zelfbediening voor koffie en thee in de ochtend en de bar gaat halverwege de middag open.
Locatie
Blankenberge is een echte badplaats, vlakbij Oostende, met een promenade en vis- en zeebanket-restaurantjes, in de rug gedekt door de blanke bergen (duinen). Het ligt 9 minuten treinen van Brugge; Gent is iets verder weg. En wil je echt iets bijzonders (en heb je tijd) dan kun je een rit maken met het trammetje dat langs de hele kust gaat en alle badplaatsen verbindt. Het Belgische bier is beroemd, en de bekende bier-expert Martin Hoare, uit Engeland, heeft beloofd zijn uitgebreide kennis van bieren en kroegjes ter beschikking te stellen: hij organiseert tijdens de conventie een biertocht voor kenners.
Distichon
Ja, we vonden dat een leuke naam en aangezien het de (technische) term is voor een bepaald soort tweeregelig gedicht, besloten we Poëzie als thema van de conventie te nemen. "Voor wie echt geïnteresseerd is: het bestaat uit een hexameter en een pentameter en werd in de Griekse volkspoëzie veel gebruikt". O, en voor wie zich afvraagt wat bier (zie vorige alinea) met gedichten te maken heeft:DISTIC(h)ON is zowel een tweeregelig rijmpje als een soort gerst...

Frank Roger
[Frank] Frank Roger is waarschijnlijk de enige Belgische fan die vanaf dat hij ze ontdekte, alle Beneluxcons in Nederland heeft bijgewoond en vrijwel alle tussenconventies ook. Als fan is hij bescheiden en charmant maar met een pittig surrealistisch gevoel voor humor. Als schrijver is hij in zoveel talen vertaald, dat hij eigenlijk een Eurocon zou moeten opluisteren. Dat konden wij niet regelen, maar Distic(h)on zal hij zeker luister bijzetten.
Dit zegt hij over zichzelf: geboren in 1957 in Gent. Studies: Latijn- Griekse humaniora en daarna Germaanse filologie (Engels-Nederlands) aan de RUG, afgestudeerd in 1981 met een scriptie gewijd aan Philip K. Dick. In 1975 verschijnen de eerste sf-verhalen in het Vlaamse SF-Magazine, gevolgd door een reeks verhalen in diverse Vlaamse en Nederlandse sf-tijdschriften en bundels (als Ganymedes en de reeks Vlaamse Filmpjes.)
Later, eind jaren tachtig, treedt een zekere stroomversnel- ling op: tientallen verhalen (sf, fantastiek, en moeilijker classificeerbaar materiaal) verschijnen in een diversiteit aan tijdschriften (sf-bladen, literaire tijdschriften en muziekmagazines) en bundels (Ragnarok, Doemprofeten & Zie- ners, Geestverschijningen) en ook andere media: (audiocassette, CD-ROM, elektronische boeken).
En niet alleen in het Nederlands maar ook in het Engels (Engeland, Ierland, USA,) het Frans (Franse en Waalse bladen), het Duits, het Spaans ( Spanje en Argentinië), het Portugees, het Roemeens, het Grieks, het Bretoens, het Litouws, het Fins, het Hebreeuws en het Esperanto. In totaal meer dan 400 publicaties in dertien talen. Enkele tientallen publicaties in het Duits leidden tot een uitnodiging als eregast op een regionale Duitse sf-conventie (LausitzCon 3, Hoyerswerda, 1995).
In 2000 bracht de Duitse uitgeverij OnlineBookDirect enkele e-books: een verhalenbundel in het Duits en twee titels in het Engels, de bundel "Kirk?s Jihad and other Strange Events" en de roman "Eyecatcher", gevolgd in 2001 door nog een Engelstalige roman, "Bonobo Sapiens". In 2002 verscheen een verhalenbundel, "Kirks Dschihad und andere seltsame Ereignisse", in de reeks Solar Tales van de Duitse uitgever Solar-X Editions. In 2003 verscheen een verhalenbundel in twee talen ("Het zand dat euwen bedekte en andere verhalen" / "The Sand That Covered Ages And Other Stories") in het kader van het "Babylonia"-project van de Macedonische uitgever Blesok.

Belangrijkste interesses/invloeden buiten de fantastische literatuur: muziek
(metal/heavy-rock en symfonische/ progressieve rock) en reizen.
Onze Fan Eregast: Dirk Bontes
Dirk is al heel lang fan en heeft allerlei dingen opgezet, gedaan en georganiseerd, o.a. een conventie met het Milieu als thema. Hij heeft diverse keren de Millennium Award helpen organiseren en steekt veel tijd in het begeleiden van aankomende jonge schrijvers. Hij heeft menig ?ernstig wetenschappelijk praatje? afge-stoken op conventies en speelde in de CozyCon Horrorfilm de meest merkwaardige inspecteur van politie die ik ooit heb zien langskomen. Zijn hart heeft hij verpand aan de Vogon Poetry-wedstrijd en wier hem daar heeft zien optreden (en prijzen uitdelen) zal dat nooit meer vergeten.
Internationaal: Alastair Reynolds
Alastair Reynolds zal onze derde eregast te zijn op Distichon. Hij was al eens op bezoek, in Maastricht 4 jaar geleden, maar sindsdien is er veel nieuws gebeurd. Hij heeft een derde boek uitgebracht en schrijft nu full time! Ook een uitgelezen kans voor Belgische lezers hem eens te leren kennen.
Charmant en enthousiast, zoals we hem al kenden, zei Alastair meteen Ja! toen we hem vroegen voor (alweer een) Beneluxcon: Distichon in Blankenberge. Maar dat hij zo aardig is, was niet onze voornaamste reden om hem uit te nodigen. Zelfs niet dat-ie mooie boeken schrijft. Dat deed-ie namelijk al eerder.
Maar echt iets om te vieren is het feit dat Alastair sinds sinds een paar maanden full time schrijver is. De in 1966 in Wales geboren schrijver, die Fysica en Astronomie studeerde en vrijwel onafgebroken voor Estec in Noordwijk heeft gewerkt, heeft zijn werkgever februari 2004 de rug toegekeerd.
Schrijven is nu het belangrijkste waarvoor hij zijn dagen gebruikt, en alleen af en toe wil hij nog wel eens bij de Europese Ruimtevaartorganisatie schnabbelen als adviseur.
En of het nu daardoor komt, maar behalve het net in betaalbare paperback uitgekomen Absolution Gap, komt er eind van dit jaar misschien nóg een boek, een losse roman, Century Rain geheten
Een tweede reden speelt misschien nog meer in Nederland dan in de Engelstalige wereld. Science Fiction lijkt op zijn retour te zijn. Verzwolgen onder, teveel middelmatige mediaproducties en verder een enorme golf elfjes en draken - allemaal niks mis mee, mits goed verteld, maar we beginnen intussen een tekort te krijgen aan ?echte? SF, het verhaal dat zich zo goed mogelijk aan de bestaande natuurwetten houdt en daarmee speelt en vooral: een verhaal dat laat zien hoe ongelofelijk poëtisch die nuchtere wereld in elkaar kan zitten.
In Absolution Gap speelt Reynolds onder andere een prachtig wetenschappelijk verantwoord spel met waarschijnlijkheid... Nee, dat moet je lezen, en niet erover lezen.
En je kunt er met Alastair ook over praten, als je naar Blankenberge komt. Doen!

We are going back!
In 2004 we are bringing Beneluxcon back to its roots. Beneluxcon was conceived in Belgium and the very first was held in Belgium. Now we are going back, with a mixed, Netherbelgian, crew.
Where are we going
Blankenberge is on the Belgian coast, some 15 miles north of Ostend. The town has a sea promenade, a 1933 pier, shops and sea food restaurants. Trains go there from Ostend every hour - a 40 minutes? trip. Through trains run from the Bruxelles? Eurostar Station every hour and take 1 hr.50 minutes. Medieval Bruges is only 10 minutes away by train and Ghent about half an hour.
But the fun thing is to take a trip on the streetcar (tram) that trundles along the coast between Knokke near the Dutch border to De Panne near the French frontier. Perhaps that would be the safest bet if any of you join Martin Hoare, the great beer connoisseur, in a Belgian Beer Pub Crawl he has undertaken to organise during the convention. You wonder what poetry has to do with beer? Maybe not too much in itself, but DISTICHON is, apart from a two-line rhyme, also a species of Barley...
The Alfa Inn Hotel Is a three *** family hotel that at the end of the season opens only for parties like ours. We won?t have to share with the mundanes at all. It has a pleasant lounge with a (smokefree) open fire and lots of cozy seats. It does not boast a restaurant, but there is a choice of restaurants and eateries nearby. We have some smaller rooms for dealers, workshops and the video programme and the main meeting room doubles as breakfast room in the morning. During the morning we help ourselves to coffee and tea. The rates are very reasonable, and if you have young children, book early, there are still some family rooms.

Guest of Honour: Frank Roger
[Frank] Frank Roger must be the only Belgian fan who has consistently visited all Dutch Beneluxcons and most of the Dutch in- between conventions. As a fan he is quiet but charming and displays a searingly surrealistic sense of humour. As a writer, his stories have been translated in so many European languages, he really ought to be Guest of Honour at a Eurocon, but since we couldn?t swing that, he?ll be one of our main attractions at Blankenberge, come November.
Here is what he wants to tell about himself.
Frank Roger, born in 1957 in Gent, Belgium. I studied philology, majoring in English, at the University of Gent, graduating in 1981 with a dissertation on Philip K. Dick.
My first story appeared in 1975 in a Belgian fanzine, SF-magazine, followed by many others,all signed Frank Roger, in a wide variety of Belgian and Dutch magazines and anthologies.From the late 80s onwards, I also started writing in English and French. By now more than 200 stories have appeared, in magazines and anthologies in several languages, such as Dutch, English (UK, Ireland, USA), German, French,Spanish (in Spain and Argentina), Portuguese, Romanian, Greek, Finnish, Lithuanian, Breton, Hebrew and Esperanto.
Books: In 2000 German publisher OnlineBookDirect published a few e-books, a story collection in German and two titles in English, the collection "Kirk?s Jihad and other Strange Events" and the novel "Eyecatcher", followed in 2001 by another novel in English, "Bonobo Sapiens".
In 2002 a German story collection appeared, "Kirks Dschihad und andere seltsame Ereignisse", in the series Solar Tales from German publisher Solar-X Editions.

Fan Guest of Honour
About our FAN Guest of Honour, Dirk Bontes, we'll tell ALL in PR-2. Suffice for now, that Dirk is a long time Dutch fan, who organised among many other things a convention with the Environment as a theme. He is a many times co-organiser of the Millennium Award and puts a lot of his time in counseling budding authors for the same Award. He has given several ?serious scientific talks? at conventions, has appeared as one of the weirdest police inspectors ever, in the Cozycon Horror movie, and has apparently given his heart to the Vogon Poetry Contest - his presentation of the entries (and of the prizes) is unforgettable.
Stop Press! Guest of Honour: Alastair Reynolds
He's been a guest of Beneluxcon before, but he has gone places since then, bringing out a third book and turning to full time writing. He has kindly (he is a very kind person) consented to come and entertain us once more at Blankenberghe - and maybe charm some Belgians this time as well.
Charming and as full of zest as the first time Dutch fandom met him, Alastair said YES at once, when we invited him to another Beneluxcon: Distichon in Blankenberge. But him being science fiction's Mr. Nice Guy was not our main reason for inviting him, nor was the fact that he writes great books. After all, he was doing that last time around.
But there is a reason to celebrate, since Alastair has turned full time author half a year ago. Born in Wales in 1966, Alastair, after taking Physics and Astronomy at university, spent most of his working life in the service of the European Space agency in Noordwijk. But in february 2004 he said goodbye to the day job.
Writing is how he now spends most of his time, barring a spot of free lance consulting now and then, at his former employer?s. Maybe this helped, for apart from his latest, Absolution Gap, coming out as a mass trade paperback this year, the end of 2004 may see the publication of another, stand-alone, novel: Century Rain.
A second reason for asking Alastair may be more of a reaction to what's happening in The Netherlands. Science Fiction seems to be on the way out. Swamped by too many mediocre media productions and shuttled by tidal waves of fairies and dragons - which are all right, really, as long as there is a proper story that is told well. But we are experiencing a lack of good, exciting, real SF, published or trabnslkated into Dutch: the kind of story that sticks to its scientific premisses (more or less), that brilliantly plays with the laws of nature and celebrates the beauty and poetry of the sober scientific world.
In Absolution Gap Reynolds plays a lovely, inventive game with probability... nah, you should go out and read it, instead of reading about it!
And come to Blankenberge; you can meet Alastair in the flesh. Worth it!
